Years 7 & 8 Elective Program

Wycliffe offers Year 7 and 8 students some flexibility in design of their two year program, while esnsuring that they meet Board of Studies mandatory programs and lay a strong foundation for their subsequent secondary school studies.

Board of Studies Mandatory Courses

Beyond the core curriculum of English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography and Personal Development, Health & Physical Education, the NSW Board of Studies requires students to complete a range of General Experience courses:

  • Technololgy (200 hours)
  • Music (100 hours)
  • Visual Arts (100 hours)
  • A Language (100 hours) - (at WCS this requirement is met by study of Spanish)

WCS allows students flexibility in the timing of their undertaking of these courses across the two years of Stage 4 (Years 7 and 8), apart from Technology which must be undertaken in each of Years 7 and 8.

Wycliffe Semester-Length Elective Courses

Students also have access to a range of Semester-length elective courses. Whilst reference may be made to Board of Studies syllabus outcomes, these are additional school based courses allowing flexibility for staff and students in course design. They provide opportunity for students to pursue areas of additional interest during Middle School or begin to specialize by improving their skills in a potential future area of study.

Students may study an additional two semester-length courses from the Elective list (please see the Years 7 & 8 Handbook 2009 for rules that apply to selection of courses). These extra electives may be studied in Year 7 or Year 8. Preference is always given to Year 8 students to allow them to complete their mandatory requirements.

WCS reserves the right to vary the range of courses offered from year to year based on student demand, year group size, staff availability and timetabling constraints.

In 2009 the additional electives available are:

  • Foods of Asia
  • Sports and Fitness (Basketball and Netball focus)
  • RoboChallenge (Robotics)
  • Textiles
  • Creative Clay and Colour (Visual Arts Extension and Enrichment)
